Fair Tuna Makes a Recovery from Long COVID

Tuna called me about three weeks ago and told me she has not been well at all.  She has told me several times she never felt well again after having COVID.  She had also taken the vaccine after she recovered, which has caused problems for some people.   And she didn't want to see me at the beauty shop until she recovered.

I told her that bromelaine and NAC have helped a lot of people with long COVID, and she wanted to try it.  So I ordered it on Amazon.  I don't know what caused the problem, but the Amazon order never arrived.  I decided to try Mother's Market, in California.  Just a health food store that I knew of.   I actually noticed that they were out of most of their bromelaine and NAC.   Well, maybe there are a lot of people that heard they are good for long COVID.  Anyway, there were delays in me getting any bromelaine and NAC.  Tuna became frantic.  Well, if she was so frantic why didn't she just go to a health food store?  I told her they probably had them at Walmart.  Really!!??

Finally the supplements arrived and she sent her husband over to pick them up.  Today she stopped by ecstatic with how great she feels.  I told her that bromelaine is a pineapple extract that is used as a digestive enzyme and it helps to dissolve proteins, so probably it works on the spike proteins that are the big problem with COVID as well.   "When you shop for groceries you might get a pineapple or some canned pineapple," I suggested.   And what does NAC do?  Uh. I think it raises glutathione levels.  What is glutathione?  Uh.  I think it's an antioxidant the body makes.  "Anyway, be sure to take bromelaine and NAC together," I said.  Yes, yes, she's doing that.

So we all lived happily ever after.

Computer Shopping

The computer I'm using now was purchased at Walmart.com for around $375.  It's been a nice computer, but lately I've noticed that there are signs that the battery is failing.   The good news is that I found another $375 computer at Walmart.com.  It has more features than this one.  There were a lot of refurbished computers.   I decided on one that was from 2017.  Most of them didn't give the model year.  The main difference that might make is that sometimes an older computer can't handle an updated browser or some other software.  But most likely it will be OK for a long time.

A Babble of Barbers. English Collective Nouns List

 https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:English_collective_nouns

Most of these collective nouns I've never heard of.  A few of them are used.  I think comedians in the 1500s wrote them.

Death Dream.

I dreamed of my father last night.  I was so glad to see him.  He asked me for a Coke, and I asked him if a Diet Coke would be OK.  Yes.  He said that he needed to go.  He was looking for a new home.   "Can I go with you?"  "Yes."  I was very happy about that, but I immediately woke up.  A death dream.  Would I be joining my father soon?

100% Chance of Rain?

Yesterday the National Weather Service announced that there would be a 100% chance of rain.  Also it would be windy.  There might even be tornados.  I've heard all this before.  When would it rain?  Overnight 100%, and this morning 100%.  We'll see.

I looked at the sky about an hour ago.  "I'm just not seeing anything more than overcast," I declared.  "I don't see 100% chance of rain."

Today is probably the day that trash services will come by.  I say this because, for the first time in two years, they've shown up regularly once a week.  Usually twice a month was their max.  The CEO of trash services apparently wasn't aware that as likely as not there was no trash collection on a regular basis, because he had hired someone else to collect the trash and they figured out that actually collecting the trash was optional.  There seemed to be few complaints.  But he flat out asked me in a text if the trash had been collected lately. "No."  He was not aware of the craziness of trash collection around here.  Usually the trash didn't get collected until I called his fellow trash service CEO and begged him to call our trash service CEO.  "Animals are scattering the trash all over the place," I whimpered.  "Oh, that's not good," said AJ.  Not just animals.  A bear.  Then our trash service would finally show up.  I really had to get desperate to call AJ, and I would have called our collector, Larry, but Larry would not answer the phone or respond to texts, and I didn't know where he lived.  Ultimately I put the trash in the trunk of the car and hauled it over to the landfill.  Then about two months ago,  trash services began to show up religiously on Wednesdays.  This had never happened before.  But still,  to guess what time he would be there was tricky.  And so it was that I went out around 9:30 this morning to try to snooker the trash collector.  Yay!  Success!

But wait.  What's going on in the sky?  The wind had picked up and a lot and dark clouds were flying around overhead.  I walked around the yard to check for tornados from different vantages.  Probably not.  I gave the feral cats their goody, and then called for Precious, the only one I actually like.  The other cats have just about taken care of Precious.  He was messed up the last time I saw him.  No Precious.

As soon as I got inside I could hear the rain falling on the roof.  Nice.  So it has rained after all.

That's life in Paradise today.

Destroying spike protein! - COVID-19 update 60

Drama at Walmart

I went to Walmart pickup today.   It was a bad hair day, and I decided not to fight it.  What could go wrong?  It's not a long trip and there is little opportunity for social interaction or having some of the craziness that can happen inside the store erupt.   In fact, it was so strange in 2020 that I've never been back inside a Walmart.  I place an order online and go to the pickup area, call them, and someone comes out and puts my groceries in the trunk.   And away we go.

One associate had been especially friendly to me and I had the feeling that somehow he had decided to avoid me for unknown reasons.  So, I halfway hoped to avoid him too.   He was indeed there, and did manage to avoid me, so that landmine was negotiated OK.  Then a woman appeared with my order.  Goodness.  She was polite and friendly enough, but I wish I had a photo of her.  She was a sight to behold.  Her pink hair was in even more of a bad hair day than mine, in a confusing tangle with about two inches of dark roots.  She wore a ring in her nose.  I wanted to inspect her clothing getup more carefully but I didn't want to be rude so I pretended there wasn't anything unusual about her.  She looked something like a clown.  But she did a good job of handling my order, and I was glad to leave Walmart with my groceries.

I headed out toward the outskirts of town, and passed a pile of clothing with a Walmart bag attached piled up on the sidewalk.  In fact, it appeared that someone had collapsed on the sidewalk walking home from Walmart.  The bad angel on my left shoulder told me, no, it was just a pile of clothing.  The good angel on the right shoulder told me to turn around and render aid.   I pulled into a driveway across the street and went over to see what was happening on the sidewalk.  At that point I saw that it was a man who was now sitting up.  He was in such a condition that I was nervous about him, but I went ahead and greeted him.  I asked him if he was OK and told him I was afraid he was hurt.  No, he said, he was fine.  He didn't smile, but I could see that he had no teeth.   He was in some sort of dire straits, but I couldn't determine what sort.   One of his problems was that he looked to be too elderly to be trying to make a trip to Walmart on foot.  Still, I didn't want to offer a ride.  He appeared to be a starvation victim because he was extremely thin.  Seldom have I seen anyone who looked so ragged.  I was satisfied that I had done an adequate amount of checking on him, and waved goodbye and limped away.

Vaccinated by Salad?

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/09/29/fact-check-plants-not-being-modified-only-covid-19-vaccines/5887617001/

I read an article claiming that the COVID vaccine was being studied to put into lettuce, thereby getting people to take the vaccine unknowingly by eating food.  I think the idea has been thought of, and even is in the process of being studied.  I don't think it's being done now, since it hasn't been developed yet.

I don't think giving credence to such an idea is silly.

Can vaccines be put into food?  Yes, rabies vaccines are given to raccoons by using food to give the raccoons an oral vaccine.  However, the COVID vaccine is extremely sensitive to temperature, and must be kept at low temperatures to remain effective.

Can the vaccine be eaten by eating vaccinated animals?  It's unlikely.  Cooking and digestion would render the vaccine ineffective.  But it seems like a good question to me since there are examples of vaccines taken orally.

Raccoon Oral Rabies Vaccination Project

The 2022 Raccoon Oral Rabies Vaccination Project, supported by Anne Arundel County, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services and the County Police Department, will begin on August 29, 2022. It will be completed by September 30, weather permitting. The goal of the annual ORV project is to immunize thousands of wild raccoons by placing approximately 84,500 baits containing rabies vaccine throughout Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It helps prevent the spread of rabies.

In 2020, Anne Arundel County had 14 confirmed rabid animals — 10 raccoons, three foxes and one bat.

If you are seeing wildlife in your area, you can fill out the Wildlife Sighting Form below. This information will help with the planning for bait distribution in a general area, and it will NOT be used for bait distribution at a specific address.

The Public Health Concern

Rabies is a significant public health threat since rabid animals can come in contact with people and their pets. Rabies is a fatal viral infection. While pets can be vaccinated against rabies, people exposed to rabies must undergo a costly series of shots to protect them from the disease.

In 1997, the U.S. Department of Agriculture licensed a safe vaccine for use

Vaccine Distribution Plan

ORV Bait

There are two bait versions that are distributed. One (made of fishmeal and polymers) looks like a small brown brick. It is approximately 0.75 inches thick by 1.25 inches square and contains a small plastic bag of the liquid rabies vaccine, Raboral V-RG. The raccoon must bite into the bag to be vaccinated. The second is similar to a condiment packet (such as ketchup), which has been coated with a waxy fishmeal attractant for raccoons. Inside the packet is the liquid rabies vaccine. The raccoon must bite into the packet to be vaccinated.

Baits are placed by ground teams in likely raccoon habitats in Anne Arundel County neighborhoods. The bait teams wear shirts with Department of Health logos and travel in marked County vehicles. In addition, the Anne Arundel County Police helicopter distributes baits in less populated areas and sometimes flies at low altitudes during the distribution.

The Vaccine

Raboral V-RG, a genetically engineered vaccine, contains a live vaccinia virus into which a small portion of the rabies virus has been inserted. It cannot cause rabies. It has been proven effective in immunizing raccoons and coyotes, and it has been shown to cause no harmful effects in more than 50 different species of birds and mammals, including dogs and cats.

From a human safety standpoint, Raboral V-RG presents a low risk. Millions of doses have been distributed in the U.S., Canada and Europe with only two reported cases of human infection due to vaccine contact. Both individuals made a full recovery. Although complications are rare, it is recommended that people younger than 18 years old, pregnant, or who have an immunodeficiency or a chronic skin condition avoid handling the bait. It is also recommended that care be taken in removing bait from a pet’s mouth.

Questions and Answers

  • What if I find a bait near my home?
Leave it alone. If you don’t want the bait near your home, use gloves or put a plastic bag over your hands to pick it up and toss it into the woods. Then, wash your hands. Bare hand contact with the bait alone is not a concern; however, it does have a strong fish odor, so handwashing is recommended.
  • What if my child picks up the bait?
If the packet containing the vaccine is not ruptured, wash your child’s hands with plenty of soap and water to help get rid of the fishy odor.
  • What if my child tears the vaccine packet or eats the bait?
It is not possible to get rabies from the vaccine. The offensive odor usually discourages a child from eating the bait. However, in the unlikely event your child bites into the plastic packet containing the vaccine or otherwise has direct contact with the vaccine liquid, you should contact your child’s physician and notify the Department of Health at 410-222-7192 for any follow-up action.
  • What if my dog, cat or ferret eats the bait?
The bait and vaccine are not harmful to animals, including dogs, cats, ferrets, livestock and wildlife. The bait may cause diarrhea or vomiting in dogs, cats or ferrets due to the high fat content of the bait.
  • What if my pet brings the bait into the house?
Placement of baits will begin on August 26 and will be completed by the end of September. During this time and for at least two additional weeks, it is recommended that pets be kept indoors or on leashes outside. This will allow enough time for raccoons to eat the bait. If your pet does find the bait, discard the bait in the trash. Wear rubber gloves or put a plastic bag over your hands when discarding. Wash your hands after handling the bait and report any contact with the vaccine liquid to the Department of Health at 410-222-7192.
  • Can this vaccine be used to vaccinate my dog or cat against rabies?
No, the vaccine is approved only for use in raccoons. You should have your dog, cat or ferret vaccinated by your veterinarian or at a public rabies vaccination clinic offered by Anne Arundel County Animal Control. The law requires pets to be vaccinated against rabies.
  • Can I have some baits to distribute on my own?
The vaccine used in the ORV Project cannot be purchased for an individual’s use, and it is federally restricted for use in rabies control programs sanctioned by an approved federal or state agency. Extensive management and agency coordination are involved to make sure the vaccine is kept under strict temperature control and is distributed with close assessment of raccoon population and habitat, baiting densities, competitive species, distribution methods and frequency, public awareness, and safety procedures for humans and pets. See the Wildlife Sighting Form below.
  • Why is the project carried out in the late summer and early fall?
This is a time when the baby raccoons are old enough to gather their own food; thus there is the possibility of reaching the largest number of raccoons with the bait. Although raccoons do not hibernate, they are less active during cold weather.
  • After this year’s project has been completed, do I still have to worry about rabies in the area?
Yes. The Department of Health cannot ensure that all raccoons are vaccinated. Raccoons or other animals with rabies could enter the area after the baiting; however, the incidence of rabies should be greatly reduced.

Countries with high Covid vaccine hesitancy. What were the outcomes?

Keto Fail

My keto experiment has gone very wrong.  I had decided to take exogenous ketones and be in ketosis.  I think it seemed like it would help with general neurological health like better sleep.

I did manage to go into ketosis most of the time.  The strange thing is that I was checking my fasting glucose in the mornings and noticed it was really getting out of hand.  Why?  Who knows.  It had started out being in the 90s, but then it went higher and higher every day - 110, then 115, and finally above 125.

Today I woke up to fasting glucose of 132, which is a first.  The only change has been the exogenous ketones, mostly from ketone salts.  So today there were no exogenous ketones.  By this afternoon my glucose was 114, which is at least going in the right direction.

This is just weird.  So the ketone salts are out.  But I am going to wait a few days and see if MCT oil is OK.

I've never actually tried raspberry ketones.

I Made Salmon Patties for Dinner

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttf7stZmGW4

I made salmon patties tonight for dinner.  It was fabulous.  I used the recipe from Black Tie Kitchen on the link above.  Oh, it was tweaked a little:

1 can salmon (14 oz)

2 1/2 oz pork panko

3 eggs

1/4 red onion diced

3/4 tsp salt

3/4 tsp garlic powder

I heated my cast iron frying pan on medium low heat, and added a generous amount of avocado oil.

I made the pork panko  by putting half of a 5 oz bag of pork rinds into a blender and blending it up into something of a powder.  There was about 3/4 of a cup.  I drained the salmon and put it in a bowl and flaked it, then sprinkled it with garlic powder and salt.   I added the onion and three eggs and mixed it all up.  Then I made patties that were about 2 - 3" in diameter.  My recipe made about 9 of them.

The patties were fried to a golden brown and flipped over and fried on the other side, about 3 minutes per side.

I made tartar sauce by mixing mayo and sweet relish.  I used my homemade mayo:

https://draft.blogger.com/blog/post/edit/7249611950753083047/2040892414148494612

After frying half of the patties,  I put a couple of heaping tablespoons of mayo in the remainder of the recipe to test out which tasted best.  I couldn't tell the difference.

In a perfect world,  cole slaw would have been good with this,  but this time I stopped at having salmon patties.

I've never made salmon patties before.  When I was a teenager, my mother and my step father liked to go to Michigan to harvest Christmas trees, and took me along to help out.  We sometimes stayed in a campground, and sometimes rented a cabin.  One of the fun things we did is to try to catch salmon.  I never caught one but my step father did, and we ate it.  My mother made part of it into salmon patties.   We went to Canada sometimes, too, as tourists.

I would say that if I had been told that tonight's patties were crab cakes, and I didn't know better, I might have believed it.  They tasted a lot like that.

Spike Protein Defense

 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36080170/

https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.09.07.286906v2

A friend of mine, let's just call her Tuna,  came down with COVID a few months ago.  She told me she was sicker than she had ever been before.  This didn't tell me very much about how sick that was, but it was a frightful experience for her.

Tuna recovered from her illness.  Then her doctor recommended that, to make sure it never happened again, she should take the "jab."  I was alarmed by this.  The immunity produced by her own immune system would have given her better immunity than an experimental jab could give her, and the jab had risks that were totally unnecessary.  There was no benefit to be gained.  Of course, she did it.  Well, I do understand the mixed up logic of frightened people.

Since then she tells me she has never felt as well as she did before COVID.   She doesn't question the possibility of the jab having a long term effect.  She believes she has long COVID.  Maybe so.  In any case, what to do?

Some articles have been published claiming that two nutritional supplements, bromelain and NAC (n acetyl l cysteine) have been shown to be effective against the spike protein that is believed to cause the illness of long COVID.  This sounds promising to me.  The concerning thing that I've heard of is the fibrous clots that either the disease itself or the anti COVID jab appear to cause.  Bromelain is a compound in pineapple that some take to break down food in the stomach after meals.  If it can do that, it could break down other things.  And what does NAC do?  NAC is a supplement that I take on general principle having heard that "it's good for you."  That's about the level of my knowledge on it.  I think it is supposed to increase NAD levels.   How much to take?  Probably 500 mg of bromelain after meals and about 3 g of NAC per day, which is what I take, just for health in general.   The article on this protocol stated that both supplements should be taken to have an effect on the spike proteins.

In addition, there is another article looking at nattokinase as a possible substance to break down spike protein.  This also seems like a good idea to me because natto is just a very good thing.  One good thing about natto is that it does wonders for joint pain and inflammation.  It's just good.  I don't think natto supplements in capsule form make sense.  I just eat natto, which is fermented soy beans.  I get this on the internet from a Japanese store in New York.   I usually eat about a third of a cup.

I haven't had COVID as far as I know, and I didn't take the jab because I have a very bad history with reactions to such things.   I had one bizarre illness a few months ago that might have been COVID, except that it resolved with antibiotics.  Antibiotics aren't effective against viruses, but, who knows?  I don't know why I wouldn't have had COVID, having taken no precautions at all except wearing a mask if required.   I do two things that help me stay well.  I eat a ketogenic diet and I usually take a hot bath once a week, and I mean hot.  I do that because all sorts of illnesses like the flu that I have come down with have resolved from taking a hot bath, so in case I've been exposed to germs in my regular life, which I know I have, that way they are either weakened or just eliminated.

I've heard scary stories about people in good health having strokes and heart attacks in higher numbers recently.  I don't think people need to be afraid, but I do think it would be a good idea to protect oneself with supplements and saunas or hot baths, and that isn't only because of COVID, but for better overall health.
