Broccoli Sprouts
Sometimes I've heard about things I should do. One recommendation was to live on sprouts for six months. Why? I don't remember exactly. It resets the health sort of. But I filed that away.
I started sprouting because I just thought one should eat their fresh produce, but it can be hard to do. My gardens had problems of every sort. And they took forever to produce. The grocery produce was expensive, not really that good, and then when I took it home it had to be properly stored and eaten soon or it would spoil. It was all a never ending chore.
One day a catalog arrived, and they were trying to sell their sprouting kits. They just didn't sell, so the kits went on sale for $15. That included a book on sprouting by Ann Wigmore, 7 one and a half pound mylar bags of assorted sprouting seeds, and a tray type sprouter. Maybe sprouts would fix the fresh produce problem. Not only that, since I was the grower, I knew they could be grown organically.
Then I fell upon hard times for a while. I injured my leg, making it very painful to go to the grocery store. And so, having all the sprouting paraphernalia I decided to live on sprouts. I made almost two gallons of sprouts a week. And did I starve? No. I still haven't quite lost the weight from doing that. I just found it easier to grow two gallons of sprouts a week than to go to the grocery and shop. And it took less time. The doggie too had to live on sprouts for several months. He actually seemed to enjoy it. How many months? At least six months. I should mention that I found recipes for stir frying, salads and smoothies and usually made a dish like egg fu young with them. I mixed alfalfa sprouts with tuna and egg salad for the lettuce and celery style crunch. My grocery bills per month were $75. And not that long ago, 2012.
At the end of the day, except for being a little heavier, I was in better health than almost anyone. A doctor did tests on me and marveled at my numbers, saying, "We haven't seen numbers like that around here in a long time." But what was the most important lesson for me during that time? I knew that neither I nor the doggie were ever going to starve. We could live indefinitely on sprouts. And they are the easiest thing to store. Sprouting seeds takes up little room and can last for years. Then when you want sprouts, you begin your little crop and in about five days you harvest fresh produce.
Now, the piece de resistance. Broccoli sprouts. During my sprouting experiences I tried a variety of sprouts, and settled pretty much on the old standbys: mung and alfalfa. But I did like broccoli sprouts also, an amazing invention. I read a number of articles about them and their medicinal properties. The essence of broccoli sprouts is used in the treatment of breast cancer. What is the essence? Sulforaphane. This is the ingredient that gives cruciferous vegetables their healthful properties. The funny thing is, sulforaphane is 50 times stronger in the sprout than in the mature plant. This is because all of the sulforaphane magic is in the seed to begin with, and as the seed grows, the sulforgaphane dilutes, rather than increases. In fact, one doctor wrote that no more than one quart of broccoli sprouts should be eaten daily because more than that would become a toxic. And what did broccoli sprouts do for me? They reduced pain better than pain killers.
This is my new sprouting tray. I liked it because it has a lid, keeping gnats off in warmer weather. If the weather is really warm, like in the summer, I just grow them in the refrigerator. Well, the only ones that complain much about warm weather are broccoli sprouts. I didn't think the broccoli sprouts would grow well in this, but they really loved it. The last day I put them in a window to green. It also keeps in moisture like a terrarium.
So, eat sprouts and live happily ever after.
PS. Half a cup of broccoli sprouts contains as much vitamin C as a lemon.
Emboldened Prowler
At 8:00 am, I was sitting opposite the window air conditioner, getting dressed. I heard a rattle at the window and assumed a cat was walking on the air conditioner. That is a place cats like. I saw movement behind the accordion type pleats on one side of the air conditioner. Suddenly someone put their hand onto the pleat, and I could clearly see the silhouette of someone's hand for around 10 seconds. I hid in the closet and peeked out. The curtains cover the open window, and it would have been difficult to see inside the room, except maybe not impossible. Someone appeared to be doing that.
I went out and walked around the house, and saw no one, but the place where I saw the hand was in easy reach. Putting my open hand on the accordion pleat was a tight fit, making me think this was probably a hand my size or smaller, which would probably be a woman.
Who would be demented enough to do something like this? A few people came to mind. Mother's "friend" Dottie had stayed here with her for a while, so she was familiar with my room. And probably still felt as if she had some perfect right to trespass on my property. I asked my mother if she had given her a key. "No, but she asked me for a key." Since Dottie had called her a few days ago, I knew she wasn't convinced she is unwelcome. She almost certainly wants money from my mother, who gave her money in the past because my mother is an easy mark. Well, someone was here this morning, anyway. Not a nice person either. If that was Dottie, she doesn't seem to understand who she's dealing with. Why would she come here? Halloween?

New Mystery Coin
Lately I've been finding coins in curious places, especially in the kitchen in front of the backdoor.. Once outside the back steps leading to the same door. The odd thing is that I have found these coins in places where I would have seen them earlier if they had been there. I would say the coins seem to appear about every two or three months.
Today I found another of these coins when I was in the kitchen putting away the groceries. It was too covered in dirt or something to read the date without cleaning it up. I toted it to my special hiding place for mysterious coins.

Satan Calls
I got a weird phone call last night. Someone asked for my mother by name. I foolishly told them they were speaking to her daughter. Who might be calling? She said, "This is Dottie." "Well, I know a lot of Dotties. What is your last name?" "This is Dottie Hendricks, the bad woman you went on a trip with." !!!!! Whaaaaat???? I smashed the call block button and got rid of her. Beware!!!! Dottie is mean as a snake.

More Kitties Come Calling
A couple of days ago a kitty that looked like this came calling. He had heard there was Kit and Kaboodle here. Soon he was in a cat fight with the gray cat.
Today he was back. He has the most unusual coloring, almost white with orange tabby accents, and blue eyes. The front door was open because I was bringing in groceries, so he just pranced right in. He probably noticed Ringo doing the same thing. I couldn't help but notice some similarities between this cat and Ringo, although Ringo has a lot more orange tabby. It was a beautiful kitty and didn't seem to be feral, but it ran outside as soon as I saw him in the house. I took some Kit and Kaboodle out, and he gobbled while I brought in the rest of the groceries.
Well, are you a good mouser, cat?
Vladimir Putin Visits Dreamland
I dreamed last night that Vladimir Putin came to visit my mother. He was very friendly and she was enjoying the visit. I entered the room, and when he saw me he decided to examine me with a stethoscope that he was wearing. He wanted to check my heartbeat and breathing. Did this seem strange? Well, yes, but it seems strange when a doctor does it, too. End of story. I woke up.

New Kitty Toy
I have new magic for the kitty.
UPDATE: The reaction of the kitty to the laser toy was, "When can I play with the bird play pretty?" I guess it's more fun to scratch and bite a stuffed toy. The laser light is just too cerebral for him.

The Cat That Came In From the Cold
The feral kitties around here have been rounded up and taken to the vet to live on his farm as barn cats, among them, the mother of Ringo. Ringo was nowhere to be found, and was finally located accidentally locked in the shed.
Unlike his siblings, Ringo liked to follow me around and come into the house to have his treat. He also liked to be petted. Since he wasn't hissing at me or trying to scratch, a friendship developed. Ringo is the new cat on the block. Another nice thing about Ringo is that, since he is male, I don't have to worry about kittens.
Ringo has discovered the kitty playtoys and likes to have a dish of half and half. Ringo explained, "I'm a cat. I do what I like."

Manzanilla Olives
Behold, I show you a mystery. Somewhere someone decided to stuff manzanilla olives with pimentos. Who was this mysterious person? What gave them this idea? No one knows. Did it have anything to do with the color green being the opposite of the color red? If one were to stare at the pimento stuffing for about a minute and then look at a blank sheet of paper, one would see that they are still seeing a stuffed olive, but the olive has turned red, and the pimento has turned green.
