A Strange Sight

Today I drove absentmindedly down the dirt road to my house at about noon. I was driving slowly, when I suddenly saw a man in the middle of the road. I wasn't in danger of hitting him accidentally, but I thought he was a bit careless. I was bearing down on him, about 25 feet away when I saw him. He seemed oblivious to me, never noticing at all that he had walked in front of a car, or making eye contact with me. I was cautious to slow to a crawl, so as not to startle him. He appeared to be going across the road to check the mail, but when he reached the two mailboxes it seemed odd to me that instead he walked between the the mailboxes, which were about three feet away from each other, walking straight into nowhere. I was curious about the resemblance he bore to Jim, my late husband. As I reached the place where he was only a few seconds later, he suddenly vanished before my eyes. I stopped the car, and backed down the road, trying to find him. There was a barbed wire fence, the mailboxes, a pasture, and a tree. There was just no one there and no where he could have gone.
