TCA 25% Chemical Peel on My Hands

About ten days ago I finally got brave enough to try a TCA 25 % chemical peel on my hands.   I watched Youtube videos about it, especially "KuwLeo", who really has done a great series about his own work with peels, TCA 25% in particular.

It was a simple matter of pouring TCA 25% in a little dish and preparing my hands.  I washed my hands with gel type soap, which is preferable because regular bar soap contains fats, and the chemical can spend all its time working on fats left over from the soap on the skin, and not do as good a job on the skin.  Then I wiped off my hands with acetone, or nail polish remover.  Why? To remove any remaining oils on the skin.  Did I use gloves?  No, but it's recommended.  I forgot.  I used a fan brush to apply the chemical.  I am satisfied that it did a good job, but next time I'll use gauze, just because it's easier to handle for me.  I painted the chemical on the back of my hands and my fingers.  This time there was a sting, but nothing big.  Apparently I have a high pain threshold.  I put on two coats of chemical, and almost immediately saw frosting, which means a white fizz that forms when the chemical reacts to the skin.  Using Jessner's peel didn't always cause frosting for me, so I was glad to see this level of reaction.  But still, I didn't see a lot of frosting with two coats.  Since I haven't done TCA 25% before, I immediately began to wash the peel off my hands.  If I want to do more, I can do more later.

I washed my hands for two minutes in regular water, and that was the end of the "procedure."  The next day I didn't see much difference in my hands, but on the second day I began to see brown, shriveled skin, more than I've seen with past peels, but not enough to cause any alarm.   I also saw little darker brown spots sprinkled all over my hands, where there was much more sun damage than I had realized.  I used Vasoline and another moisturizer called Dermasil, just depending on which one was closest.  Dermalsil was really comforting to my dry, dry hands.

I had also gotten cortisone cream and Neosporin with pain relief medication in it.  I never had pain to speak of, but my goodness, that night my hands itched.  This was a surprise because I hadn't heard much about the itching.  It was itchy enough that I woke up several times because of it.  I tried the cortisone cream, which was supposed to help itching, but it was next to useless.  I used the Neosporin, and the pain relief pretty much eliminated the itching, until I eventually rubbed it off and had to put on some more.  On my left hand I put on Neosporin and/or moisturizer, and a glove to make them stay put.  But on my right hand I didn't wear a glove much because it got in the way of using my fingers.  I guess I should have cut the tips off the fingers and worn a glove on that hand too.  My left hand did a little better, with no cracking.  They said on the videos to avoid cracking.  On my right hand many tiny little bumps appeared that may have been blisters.  Or else I don't know what.

So after about five days my hands began to peel.  Wow.  I'm so pleased with the results.  I've been doing various things to my hands for several years now....hydroquinone cream, derma rolling, a home laser that I got from QVC.  None of those had had much of an effect.  But this!  I wish I had started with this peel.  The brown spots were drastically diminished or gone.  Wrinkles were reduced a lot.

So at this point my hands aren't 100% healed.  The hands healed more gradually than the face.  They're still peeling some, and feel dry.  I am extremely happy with the improvement.

My plan is to do at least one more peel on my hands.  I may work on a few areas on my forearms also.

This has worked out well.  My mother said, "When I saw what you were doing to your face with the peels, I thought, 'She has such beautiful skin.  Why does she do this to herself?' But then I realized that your skin is so beautiful now that you did these peels."  I know my skin was OK, but it's so improved it's hard to believe.  I'm very vain...

Stay tuned.

  1. Hi Alica. Yes, that's a good idea. I guess it's something I should do. I'm really thrilled with the results I've had with facial peels and I've only done superficial peels, but I've done a lot of them.
The skin peels address so many issues. I sure wish I had known about this when I was a teenager with acne. What misery I went through needlessly. I could have afforded this in the worst of times money wise. It's only around $30. I have a few friends from those days that were horribly scarred from acne, and to think it was so preventable.
Now I am more focused on hyper pigmentation and just the skin rejuvenation. You're right. It's a bit of a complex subject. I had to jump in and buy peels and try them before I got it sorted out.
Now there are laser peels. I haven't sorted that out at all, except to know that they're more expensive. The doctors have to buy an expensive machine, and the patient needs to be charged for it. Is it better? Well, I don't know. Maybe I'll try it sometime. I'd like to do something more aggressive in a few problems areas and I thought laser might be a good thing.
Also, skin peels tighten the skin and prevent or slow sagging.
Thank you for reading and commenting Alicia.

    1. There are several uses for chemical peels. Peels can greatly improve acne. Peels can rejuvenate the skin and also maintain youthful skin. Peels can remove hyper pigmentation and dark spots.
How many treatments are necessary? There are three levels of peels, superficial, medium, and deep. A deep peel would require one treatment, however it would need to be done by a doctor. A medium peel might need more than one peel, but many times one is sufficient. A superficial peel may require more peels to accomplish the desired results. However, several superficial peels can rival a medium peel in results. I have only done superficial peels. A medium peel would be a peel like the Obagi peel. Dr. Obagi recommends a peel every four years for maintenance. In addition to skin peels, anti aging can be accomplished with retin A. One should use a small amount of retin A at night on the face, neck, and hands. A beginning dose is 0.025%. One should gradually work up to 0.1%. At that point the aging of the skin has been shown to actually stop. That's a wonderful thing. Superficial peels can be done once a month, up to 6 times a year. Thank you for reading my blog.

    1. Hi. Yes, there is a lot of negativity toward tattoos. I've seriously considered cosmetic tattoos, but I've ruled that out. Thank you for reading Mayazoe and for commenting.

    1. Hi. There is no age limitation on chemical peels. I would recommend starting out with a Jessner's peel which is superficial and very safe. This should have a very beautiful effect on the skin. It can be done frequently too. I did this once a month for three or four months, The improvements add up each time. Then I tried a 12% TCA peel, and then a few weeks later a 20% and then later 25%. You can test yourself and your tolerance by starting with the lighter peel like Jessner's, and then trying increasing strengths of TCA. Another good idea is to use a facial cleanser once a day with !% glycolic acid, but not within a week or two of a peel. Also, it's good for the skin to use Retin A. Thank you for reading and commenting.

  6. Dear Hélène Louise, I accidentally stumbled upon your blog this morning, and am so glad that I did. I am 54 and still quite good looking, but my jawline and under chin area start sagging, and particularly my hands betray my age. Even though I am not really a sun goddess, my Mum made tanning something of a sport when I was a child, encouraging "who has the darkest tan" competitions between my siblings and myself, and I therefore have a lot of sun spots on my hands and limbs. Luckily, I was always quite the bookworm, which is probably why my face got spared. Would you mind letting me know which product you used? I want to purchase online, and do it right away. I live in Israel, where we go from winter straight into summer, but I wouldn't mind using a total sun block until I am completely healed.

    1. Hi Sandra. I'm sorry to take so long to respond. I had some technical problems with my blog for a while. I'm so glad you enjoyed my blog. There is so much that can be done with minor skin treatments like chemical peels and facial exercise and Retin A. 54 is the perfect age to start I think, but any age is very good. I wouldn't worry about sun damage as a child too much because it's reversible. I used Skin Obsession. I think I bought it on Amazon. Best wishes dear. Thank you for reading and your lovely comment.
